DALTON — Just when you think the wrecker’s ball is about to slam into our old DHS building, a glimmer of hope arises in the form of a proposal to convert the building into senior housing. Previously thought to be beyond repair because of a leaky roof causing some internal damage, one official of Elder Services of Berkshire County said, for the most part, the building is sound. Elder Services introduced a proposal to convert the old school building into 30 to 40 housing units for income-eligible senior citizens over the age of 62.
At a Dalton Select Board meeting in April 2010, Elder Services announced that it had voted to approve $20,000.00 to conduct studies and to prepare an HUD grant proposal. It appears that Dalton’s Select Board is excited about proceeding with the study and supports the idea. The prospect of senior housing next door to the under-construction senior center makes the idea even more desirable.
